Why choose The North Yorkshire Gallery?
The North Yorkshire Gallery is a family-run business owned by Laurie and Jemma Smithies. For nearly 20 years, we have been photographing, printing and creating high-quality Yorkshire wall art and gifts inspired by the places we love most. Based on the historic Church Street in Whitby, we have built a reputation for producing premium canvas prints, framed prints, photographic prints and unique Yorkshire gifts featuring Whitby, the Yorkshire Coast, the North York Moors, the Yorkshire Dales and many other beautiful locations. Over the years, Laurie’s photography has been used by organisations including the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and the RNLI, along with a variety of businesses, publications and tourism organisations. As a small independent business, we genuinely care about every order, from capturing the photograph to producing the finished product.
Do you have a physical gallery and can I visit?
Yes. The North Yorkshire Gallery is located at 155 Church Street, Whitby, in the heart of Whitby’s historic old town. Visitors are always welcome to browse our gallery, which displays hundreds of photographs, canvas prints, framed prints, wall art, gifts and souvenirs.
Who takes the photographs?
Every photograph sold by The North Yorkshire Gallery is taken by Laurie Smithies, a Yorkshire landscape photographer and co-owner of the gallery. For nearly two decades, Laurie has spent countless early mornings, late evenings and challenging weather conditions photographing Whitby, the Yorkshire Coast, the North York Moors, the Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District and many of Britain’s most spectacular landscapes.
Do you offer delivery?
Yes. We offer delivery throughout the United Kingdom. Every order is carefully packaged to help ensure it arrives safely and in perfect condition, whether you’re ordering a small gift or a large piece of wall art.
What are your most popular products?
Our most popular products change throughout the year, but canvas prints and framed prints remain among our best sellers. Our glass coasters continue to be one of our most popular gifts in our Whitby gallery, while our illuminated light-up bottles have become one of our signature product ranges and have been sent to customers throughout the UK and around the world.
Who owns The North Yorkshire Gallery?
The North Yorkshire Gallery is owned by Laurie and Jemma Smithies. Laurie photographs every image featured throughout our collection, while Jemma oversees the printing and production of many of our products, ensuring every order meets the high standards our customers expect.
Can I contact you before buying?
Absolutely. We’re always happy to answer questions about our photography, products, framing options or anything else before you place an order. Whenever possible, we can also arrange for customers to view a particular photograph or product before purchasing, even if it is not currently on display in the gallery.
Why are your photographs different?
Timing is everything. Laurie has spent years returning to the same locations in search of exceptional light and unusual conditions, with many photographs captured at sunrise or sunset when the landscape is at its most colourful and dramatic. Over the years he has also photographed Yorkshire during spectacular snowfalls, sea fog, colourful sunsets and displays of the Aurora Borealis.
Are your prints high quality?
Yes. Every canvas print, photographic print and wall art product is produced using professional equipment, premium materials and fine art printing standards. Our canvas and photographic print products are produced under the ArtSure programme, demonstrating our commitment to recognised professional standards, exceptional colour accuracy and long-lasting quality.
What sizes are available?
Many of our photographs are available in a wide range of sizes, from smaller photographic prints to large statement canvas prints and framed wall art. Available sizes vary depending on the product you choose.
Do you produce your own prints?
Yes. We produce and fulfil many of our products ourselves, allowing us to maintain complete quality control from the original photograph through to the finished product. Many items are made to order, enabling us to offer a wide choice of sizes, framing options and product formats.
How long does delivery take?
As many of our products are individually made to order, we generally recommend allowing up to 10 working days for delivery. Smaller gift items are often ready sooner, while larger products such as canvas prints and framed prints may take a little longer. If you need an order for a birthday, anniversary or another special occasion, please contact us before ordering and we’ll do our best to accommodate your deadline.
Where can I see your photography?
You can view our photography on our website, through our social media channels or by visiting our Whitby gallery. We regularly add new photographs throughout the year, featuring Whitby, the Yorkshire Coast, the North York Moors, the Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District and many other stunning locations across the UK.
Do people follow your photography online?
Yes. Today, more than 170,000 people follow our photography on Facebook and over 30,000 people follow us on Instagram. Our community includes people from Yorkshire, across the UK and around the world who share our passion for Yorkshire’s coastline, countryside, villages and historic landmarks.
Why are you part of the ArtSure programme?
The ArtSure programme demonstrates our commitment to producing professional-quality photographic products, giving customers confidence that our photographic products are produced using recognised professional equipment, premium materials and proven production standards rather than simply focusing on the lowest possible price.
Can I have a different photograph on a product?
In many cases, yes. If you’ve seen one of our photographs elsewhere on our website and would prefer it on a different product, such as a canvas print, framed print, photo slate, jigsaw or another item, simply get in touch and we’ll be happy to discuss the available options.
Do you sell Whitby gifts?
Yes. We stock a large collection of Whitby gifts featuring many of the town’s most famous landmarks, including Whitby Abbey, the 199 Steps, Whitby Harbour, Whitby Beach, the Whalebones and Swing Bridge, making them ideal keepsakes and gifts for anyone who loves Whitby.
Are your products suitable as gifts?
Absolutely. Our products are popular gifts for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, retirements, Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and many other special occasions, whether you’re buying for someone who loves Whitby, the Yorkshire Coast, the North York Moors or Yorkshire in general.
Are your prints ready to hang?
Most of our wall art products arrive ready to display. Our framed prints, canvas prints, floating canvas prints and box prints are supplied ready to hang straight from the box.
