Welcome to The North Yorkshire Gallery website. We are a family operated business offering photography to print, we pride ourselves on our standards and providing a friendly professional service. Our story has a humble beginning, we started out selling our canvases and prints at local shows and events and have grown to what we now have today, a spectacular gallery in the heart of Whitby with a global client base and following.
Our Story
We’re a husband and wife team — Laurie and Jemma Smithies — with support from our family helping to run our Whitby gallery.
Our journey began in the mid-2000s when we bought our first house. Like many people, we wanted to find beautiful, high-quality prints to make our house feel like a home — but we quickly realised how hard that was. The prints and photographs we found were poor in quality, the canvases were worse, and even after paying over the odds, we ended up settling for wall art off eBay that we just weren’t happy with.
It left us thinking: people deserve better.
At the time, mass-market print operations were everywhere, flooding the market with cheap prints that looked good online but were disappointing in real life. We knew straight away we didn’t want to be part of that. Instead, we invested in the best printers available, sourced the highest quality canvas and fine art papers we could find, and focused on doing things properly — something we’re still passionate about to this day.
Laurie developed his photography skills, and today, our Facebook page — The North Yorkshire Gallery — has grown to over 160,000 followers.
That’s an incredible achievement for a local page and a real testament to the connection we’ve built with people who love Yorkshire and appreciate genuine quality.
We’re friendly, genuine, and down-to-earth — and we believe in creating work that truly speaks for itself.
