Why Danby Has Always Been Special To Me
Danby has always been a special place to me. Long before I became a professional photographer, I spent many happy days there with my dad. We'd often head to Danby to fish before camping overnight, and some of my earliest memories of the North York Moors come from exploring the countryside around the village. Even now, every time I visit with my camera, those memories come flooding back.
Over the years, Danby has become an important part of our own business too. Before opening the North Yorkshire Gallery in Whitby, Jemma and I regularly exhibited at the Danby Show in the craft marquee, where we met so many friendly local people and visitors who shared the same love for this beautiful part of Yorkshire. It has always been a place we've enjoyed returning to, both personally and professionally.
Nestled in the heart of the North York Moors National Park, Danby is one of Yorkshire's most picturesque villages. With its open village greens where sheep often wander freely, traditional stone cottages, welcoming pub, excellent bakery and tearoom, and the nearby National Park Centre, it perfectly captures everything that makes the North York Moors so special. The surrounding countryside offers countless walking routes, spectacular views across Danby Dale, opportunities to spot wildlife and, thanks to its official Dark Skies status, some of the finest stargazing in the country.

Many of my Danby photographs have been taken over several years in different seasons and weather conditions, capturing the village and its surrounding landscape at its very best. Whether you're looking for a canvas print, framed print, mounted print or photographic print of Danby, I hope this collection reflects just how special this village has been throughout my life.
Some of My Favourite Danby Photos and Prints
Danby Beacon at Sunset
Standing high above Danby Dale, Danby Beacon is one of the North York Moors' most recognisable landmarks and one of my favourite places to photograph. The beacon occupies a commanding position with panoramic views stretching across the surrounding moorland, making it a favourite destination for walkers, photographers and anyone wanting to experience the beauty of the North York Moors. In late summer, when the heather bursts into flower, the landscape is transformed into a carpet of vibrant purple and crimson, creating one of Yorkshire's most spectacular photography locations. The beacon itself has a fascinating history, with warning beacons having stood on this high ground for centuries to signal the approach of danger, including during the time of the Spanish Armada.
The hill also played an important role during the Second World War. In 1937, RAF Danby Beacon became one of Britain's pioneering Chain Home radar stations, providing early warning of approaching enemy aircraft. It famously helped direct the interception of the first German aircraft to be shot down over England during the war, and continued operating into the Cold War before eventually closing in the 1950s. Today, the radar towers have long disappeared, but the site remains one of the most peaceful and rewarding places to visit on the North York Moors. On the evening I captured these photographs, dramatic clouds rolled across the sky as the setting sun illuminated the heather surrounding the beacon with rich golden light, creating one of those unforgettable Yorkshire sunsets that keeps drawing me back with my camera year after year.

Danby Dale at Sunset
Danby Dale is one of the most beautiful valleys in the North York Moors, and during late summer it becomes even more spectacular as the surrounding hills are covered in flowering heather. This photograph was taken from high above the village, looking back across Danby as the last golden light of the day illuminated the landscape. The warm evening sunshine catches the patchwork of fields, dry stone walls and rolling moorland, while the purple heather provides a stunning foreground that perfectly frames the village below. It is a view I never get tired of returning to and one that really captures the peaceful character of Danby.

Looking Towards Botton Village from Danby Dale
As the sun continued to set, I turned my attention further up Danby Dale towards the tiny village of Botton. This view looks deep into the heart of the North York Moors, where the valley gently winds its way through open moorland towards one of Yorkshire's most remote and picturesque communities. The final light of the day bathed the hillsides and Botton Village in a beautiful golden glow, while the colourful heather covering the surrounding moors added even more warmth and atmosphere to the scene. Even after many years of photographing the North York Moors, evenings like this remind me why Danby Dale remains one of my favourite places to photograph in Yorkshire.

The Old North Riding of Yorkshire Sign
One of my favourite photographs from Danby isn't a grand landscape at all, but this old North Riding of Yorkshire sign standing proudly amongst the heather on the North York Moors. Leaning slightly with age and weathered by decades of Yorkshire winters, it tells its own story before you even notice the beautiful sunset glowing behind it. For many local people, the North Riding name still means a great deal. Although local government boundaries have changed over the years, many of us who were born and raised here have always considered ourselves to be Yorkshire through and through, making this old sign a powerful symbol of our heritage.
As the evening light faded across the moor, the sky behind the sign exploded with rich orange, pink and golden colours, perfectly complementing the purple heather surrounding it. The contrast between the ageing North Riding of Yorkshire sign and the timeless landscape behind it creates a photograph that is about much more than a road sign—it represents the history, identity and enduring spirit of this remarkable part of Yorkshire. It's one of those images that always reminds me just how proud I am to call this area home.

The Lancashire Fusilier on the Esk Valley Railway at Danby
The Esk Valley Railway is one of Yorkshire's most scenic railway lines, winding its way through the heart of the North York Moors between Whitby and Middlesbrough. Passing through Danby, it follows the beautiful Esk Valley, offering passengers spectacular views of rolling countryside, traditional villages and heather-covered moorland. It's a line I've enjoyed photographing for many years, and seeing a steam locomotive working through this landscape is always something special.
This photograph captures the magnificent Lancashire Fusilier steaming through the countryside near Danby, filling the valley with a plume of steam as it travels along the Esk Valley Railway. With the North York Moors providing the perfect backdrop, it combines two of Yorkshire's greatest attractions—historic steam locomotives and breathtaking landscapes. Images like this are a reminder of how well the railway complements the natural beauty of Danby and why this stretch of line remains one of my favourite places to photograph both trains and the Yorkshire countryside.

Winter Photography Around Danby
Danby is beautiful throughout the year, but there's something especially magical about seeing the village and surrounding countryside under a blanket of fresh snow. Winter transforms the landscape into a completely different world, softening the dry stone walls, fields and moorland while creating peaceful scenes that are perfect for landscape photography. Some of my favourite photographs of Danby have been taken during these rare snowy days, when the North York Moors become wonderfully quiet and untouched.
One of my favourite winter images isn't an obvious landscape at all. It features a small group of sheep standing in a snow-covered field near Danby during heavy snowfall. I deliberately processed the photograph in a minimalist style, allowing the white snow to dominate the scene while only the sheep and a few key details remain clearly visible. The result is a simple but atmospheric image that captures both the harshness and the beauty of winter on the North York Moors, proving that sometimes less really is more.

Danby Duck Bridge in the Snow
Danby's famous Duck Bridge is one of the village's most recognisable landmarks, and it becomes even more picturesque after snowfall. Crossing the River Esk, the traditional stone bridge is a favourite subject for photographers throughout the year, but winter gives it an entirely different character. Snow resting on the bridge, the surrounding trees and the riverbanks creates a timeless Yorkshire scene that looks as though it belongs on a Christmas card.

Photographing Duck Bridge in snowy conditions requires patience, as these opportunities don't come along very often. When everything comes together, however, the results are worth the wait. The combination of fresh snow, the historic stone bridge and the peaceful surroundings creates one of the most charming winter scenes anywhere on the North York Moors. It's a view that perfectly captures the quiet beauty of Danby during the colder months and one I'm always pleased to add to my collection of Yorkshire landscape photography.

Sunset Over Danby Village
This photograph was taken high on the moor above Danby, looking back across the village as the sun slowly disappeared towards Castleton. It's a view that perfectly captures the meeting of the North York Moors and the beautiful farmland of Danby Dale, with the evening light bringing warmth and colour to the landscape below. As the sun sank towards the horizon, the sky filled with rich shades of orange, gold and pink, creating one of those memorable Yorkshire sunsets that make every visit to the moors worthwhile.
In the foreground, large weathered boulders emerge from the heather, adding texture and character to the scene while naturally drawing your eye towards Danby Village in the valley below. The contrast between the rugged moorland, the vibrant purple heather and the patchwork of fields surrounding the village perfectly sums up why this is one of my favourite viewpoints on the North York Moors. It's a landscape I've returned to many times with my camera, and every sunset offers something completely different.
