For me, the best time to photograph Knaresborough is undoubtedly autumn. As the trees surrounding the River Nidd turn brilliant shades of gold, orange and red, the town is transformed into one of the most spectacular landscapes in Yorkshire. The colourful reflections on the calm river, combined with the viaduct, castle and historic buildings, create unforgettable scenes at sunrise, sunset and throughout the day. While Knaresborough is beautiful in every season, autumn is when I believe it is at its absolute finest.

An Autumn View Across the River Nidd

This is one of my favourite photographs of Knaresborough and, over the years, it has received what is perhaps the greatest compliment any landscape photographer could hope for. Several people have told me they believe it is the finest Knaresborough picture they have ever seen. Whether that's true or not is for others to decide, but it is certainly a compliment I will always be grateful for.

Taken from the opposite side of the River Nidd, this photograph showcases Knaresborough at its spectacular autumn best. Vibrant trees overhang the river, their rich golden and amber colours reflected beautifully in the calm water below. Beyond them, the magnificent Knaresborough Viaduct stretches across the valley, while the town's distinctive riverside buildings add warmth, character and history to the scene.

I've often thought that Knaresborough has something of the charm of both Runswick Bay and Yarm. The historic riverside setting, colourful buildings and peaceful atmosphere give it a character all of its own, and I feel this photograph captures that perfectly. For me, it represents Yorkshire at its absolute finest and remains one of the images I'm most proud to have taken.
