South Bay Scarborough from the Esplanade
One of my favourite places to photograph South Bay Scarborough is from the Esplanade, where there are magnificent views across South Bay Beach, Scarborough towards the historic headland and Scarborough Castle. This elevated viewpoint looks out over the sweeping sandy beach, colourful seafront and the town climbing the hillside, with the castle standing proudly above it all. It is one of the finest viewpoints in Scarborough and beautifully captures the character of this famous Yorkshire seaside resort. The photograph below captures this stunning view on a bright afternoon, with the sunshine beautifully lighting up the town and coastline.

South Bay Scarborough at Sunset
This second photograph was taken from the same viewpoint on the Esplanade, but as the sun was setting. The warm evening light and colourful sky transform South Bay Beach, Scarborough into a completely different scene, with the bay, the seafront and Scarborough Castle glowing beneath the sunset colours. Returning to the same location in different conditions often produces completely different photographs, and the image below shows just how spectacular South Bay Scarborough can be as the day draws to a close.

Views Across the Italian Gardens and South Bay
From the Esplanade, a slight change in direction reveals another wonderful view across Scarborough's famous Italian Gardens towards the Grand Hotel and South Bay Beach, Scarborough. The colourful gardens, winding pathways and mature trees create a beautiful foreground, while the magnificent Grand Hotel dominates the skyline. Beyond it lie the golden sands of South Bay Beach, making this one of the most picturesque views in Scarborough. The photograph below was taken on a bright summer afternoon, when the sunshine beautifully highlights the gardens, the beach and the elegant Victorian architecture.

The Italian Gardens at Sunset
Returning to the same viewpoint later in the day transforms this familiar scene into something completely different. As the evening light fades, the Grand Hotel stands silhouetted against a stunning purple sunset sky, while the illuminated pathways of the Italian Gardens add warmth and character to the foreground. With the tide out, the patterns left behind on South Bay Beach, Scarborough create extra texture across the sand, showing just how dramatically the landscape can change in only a few hours. The photograph below captures this peaceful evening atmosphere and demonstrates why it is always worth revisiting the same location in different lighting conditions.

The Scarborough Lifeboat at South Bay
South Bay Beach, Scarborough is not only known for its golden sands and traditional seaside atmosphere but also for the lifeboat that regularly launches from the beach to serve the Yorkshire coast. This photograph captures a typical day at South Bay as the lifeboat returns from the sea, with the famous Grand Hotel rising above the seafront and Scarborough's iconic big wheel adding to the classic seaside skyline. Together, these well-known landmarks perfectly capture the character of South Bay Scarborough and its enduring appeal as one of Yorkshire's favourite coastal destinations.

We have long been proud to support the RNLI, raising funds for the charity in our Whitby gallery. It was also a real honour when one of my photographs of Whitby's famous 199 Steps in the snow was selected for the RNLI's 2027 calendar. The photograph below showcases this everyday scene, celebrating the RNLI's vital work alongside the timeless beauty and maritime heritage of South Bay Scarborough.
Looking Through the Spa Bridge
Scarborough's famous Spa Bridge is one of the town's most recognisable Victorian landmarks and a wonderful place to photograph South Bay. This photograph was taken from the landward side of the bridge, looking through its impressive arches towards South Bay Beach, Scarborough and the harbour beyond. Framed by the elegant architecture of the bridge, the historic Grand Hotel stands proudly to the left, while the old lighthouse can be seen in the distance, creating a classic view that captures the timeless character of Scarborough. The photograph below highlights the beautiful blend of Victorian engineering, coastal scenery and historic landmarks that make this viewpoint so special.

Walking Across Scarborough's Spa Bridge
The second photograph was taken from the Spa Bridge itself, looking along the bridge towards the magnificent Grand Hotel. This perspective showcases the bridge's elegant Victorian design, with its decorative railings leading the eye towards one of Scarborough's most famous buildings. It is easy to imagine visitors strolling across the bridge as they have done for generations, enjoying the magnificent views across South Bay Beach, Scarborough and the Yorkshire coast. The photograph below captures this iconic scene, celebrating the Victorian heritage and seaside charm that continue to make South Bay Scarborough such a popular destination.

South Bay Scarborough from Oliver's Mount
One of the finest views of South Bay Scarborough can be enjoyed from Oliver's Mount, which offers a spectacular panoramic view across the town, the sweeping coastline and the Yorkshire coast beyond. From this elevated viewpoint, you can look down over Scarborough's rooftops towards South Bay Beach, Scarborough, following the curve of the bay to the dramatic headland where Scarborough Castle stands proudly above the sea. It is one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in the town and a favourite location for photographers throughout the year.
The photograph below was taken as evening fell over Scarborough, with the town illuminated beneath a colourful sky and Scarborough Castle standing silhouetted against the fading light. The warm glow from the buildings creates a welcoming and cosy atmosphere, while the panoramic view perfectly captures the beauty of South Bay Scarborough and shows why Oliver's Mount is regarded as one of the best viewpoints in the area.
