Aurora Borealis Yorkshire Coast, Runswick Bay
Runswick Bay provided one of the most spectacular displays of the Aurora Borealis Yorkshire that we witnessed during the remarkable Northern Lights events of 2024 and 2025. The night sky above the Yorkshire Coast was constantly changing as curtains of colour danced across the horizon, creating an unforgettable spectacle for everyone fortunate enough to be watching.
What made this particular display so special was its intensity. Normally, the Northern Lights are best seen low on the northern horizon, looking north or northeast. On this occasion, however, the Aurora Borealis was so strong that the display appeared to spread much further across the sky, extending beyond due north and creating a truly rare sight along the Yorkshire Coast.
One of my favourite photographs from the evening features the iconic Lady Palmer's Cottage on Runswick Bay beach, with the vibrant colours of the Aurora Borealis illuminating the sky behind it. The lights shifted between shades of green and purple throughout the night, providing ever-changing opportunities to capture this incredible natural phenomenon.
As I photographed the Northern Lights over Runswick Bay, a lone fisherman stood on the rocks below. Whether he realised it or not, one of nature's greatest displays was unfolding behind him. While concentrating on the sea, he was silhouetted against a sky alive with colour, creating a unique and memorable scene that perfectly captured the magic of the evening.
The combination of the Aurora Borealis, the rugged Yorkshire Coast, and the timeless beauty of Runswick Bay made this one of the most memorable Northern Lights displays I have ever photographed.
Among my favourite Aurora Borealis photographs from Runswick Bay are two portrait-orientation images that really showcase the scale and power of the Northern Lights over the Yorkshire Coast.
The first photograph features the famous Lady Palmer's Cottage, one of the most recognisable landmarks in Runswick Bay. The portrait format allowed me to capture not only the cottage itself but also the immense height of the Aurora Borealis as it stretched high above the bay. Bands of green and red light filled the sky, creating a dramatic backdrop to the historic cottage below. The second portrait photograph was taken from behind the RNLI lifeboat shed at Runswick Bay. Aurora Borealis Yorkshire Over Staithes
Staithes was one of the best locations on the Yorkshire Coast to witness the remarkable Aurora Borealis displays of 2024 and 2025. These were not the faint Northern Lights often seen low on the horizon. The display was exceptionally strong, with vivid greens, reds and purples filling the sky in a spectacle more reminiscent of Norway or the Arctic Circle than North Yorkshire.
One of my favourite Aurora Borealis photographs was taken from Staithes Beach, looking towards the RNLI lifeboat station and The Nab as powerful curtains of colour rose behind the cliffs. Another was captured beside the famous Cod and Lobster pub, where the intensity of the Northern Lights made it appear as though the Aurora Borealis was surrounding the village from every direction.
I also photographed Staithes beneath a canopy of dancing colour, with the Northern Lights illuminating the harbour, rooftops and cliffs. These rare images capture one of the most spectacular Aurora Borealis displays ever seen on the Yorkshire Coast.

Aurora Borealis Photographs at Saltburn
Some of my earliest Aurora Borealis photographs at Saltburn were taken during the first significant Northern Lights displays of 2024. While the Aurora Borealis was not yet reaching the incredible levels of intensity that would follow later in 2024 and into 2025, I was still delighted with the images I captured above the Yorkshire Coast.
For several years, I had made numerous attempts to photograph the Northern Lights at Saltburn without success, often returning home empty-handed as cloud, poor conditions or weak displays got in the way. That made these photographs particularly special, as they were the first successful Aurora Borealis images I had managed to capture at this iconic Yorkshire Coast location.
These photographs featured the classic view of Saltburn beneath the glow of the Northern Lights. Today, similar compositions have been photographed many times during strong aurora events, but at the time they felt truly unique. To the best of my knowledge, they were among the first photographs to capture this famous Saltburn scene beneath a clearly visible Aurora Borealis display.
Although the colours and intensity were more modest than the spectacular events that followed, these early photographs marked the beginning of an extraordinary period for Aurora Borealis photography on the Yorkshire Coast. As you continue through this collection, you'll see how dramatically the displays evolved, with the Northern Lights growing stronger throughout late 2024 and into 2025, producing some of the most spectacular aurora displays ever witnessed above Saltburn.
Stronger Aurora Borealis Displays Above Saltburn
The next photographs were taken around a year later, and the difference in the Aurora Borealis is immediately apparent. While there was never any guarantee that the Northern Lights would become stronger, there was a greater opportunity to witness significant displays as solar activity increased during this period.
The strength of any Aurora Borealis display depends on a number of factors, including the power of the solar storm, the direction of the charged particles released by the Sun, cloud cover and whether conditions allow the Northern Lights to be visible from the UK. Even during periods of heightened solar activity, a spectacular display is never guaranteed.
On this occasion, however, the conditions aligned perfectly. The Aurora Borealis was far stronger than in my earlier photographs, producing vibrant colours, greater intensity and a display that stretched much higher into the sky above Saltburn and the Yorkshire Coast. The difference between the two sets of images clearly demonstrates just how powerful these later Northern Lights events became.
What had previously been a subtle glow above the horizon had developed into a dramatic and colourful spectacle, with vivid greens, reds and purples illuminating the night sky. These displays ranked among the strongest Aurora Borealis events seen from the Yorkshire Coast in recent years and provided photographers with a rare opportunity to capture the Northern Lights at their very best.
The photographs below show just how extraordinary these later displays became, transforming familiar Saltburn landmarks into scenes more commonly associated with the Arctic Circle than the North East coast of England.
The Aurora Borealis Appears Overhead at Saltburn
The next two photographs perfectly demonstrate just how powerful this Aurora Borealis display was. Under normal circumstances on the Yorkshire Coast, the Northern Lights are seen low on the northern or north-eastern horizon, appearing as distant glows or curtains of colour far out to sea. During this remarkable solar storm, however, the display behaved very differently.
The Aurora Borealis became so intense that it extended far beyond its usual position on the horizon and spread across huge areas of the sky. From Saltburn, the Northern Lights were visible not only out to sea but also looking inland from Saltburn Pier and towards Huntcliff, something rarely witnessed on the Yorkshire Coast. What made the display particularly spectacular was the way the aurora formed a vast arc stretching from the eastern sky, directly overhead, and continuing all the way towards the west. Instead of being confined to the north, the Aurora Borealis appeared to envelop the entire landscape, creating a breathtaking canopy of green, red and purple light.
The scale of the display was extraordinary and more closely resembled the Northern Lights displays seen in Norway, Iceland and other parts of the Arctic Circle than those typically witnessed in England. Familiar Saltburn landmarks were transformed beneath a sky alive with colour, movement and intensity, making this one of the most impressive Aurora Borealis events ever seen along the Yorkshire Coast.
Such was the strength of the display that some of my photographs attracted considerable attention on social media. A number of people questioned whether the images were genuine, finding it difficult to believe that the Northern Lights could appear so dramatic above Saltburn. However, those fortunate enough to witness the event firsthand knew the photographs accurately reflected what was unfolding overhead. This was one of those exceptionally rare occasions when the Aurora Borealis over the Yorkshire Coast rivalled displays normally associated with some of the world's most famous aurora destinations.

One of my favourite Aurora Borealis photographs from Whitby was taken from the famous Khyber Pass, looking out towards Whitby's piers and the North Sea. Spectacular Aurora Borealis Over Tate Hill Beach, Whitby
This photograph captures one of the most spectacular Aurora Borealis displays I have ever witnessed on the Yorkshire Coast. Unlike a typical Northern Lights display, where the aurora remains low on the northern horizon, this exceptional solar storm produced an immense arc of colour stretching across the sky from east to west.
Standing at Whitby, it felt as though the entire sky had come alive. The Aurora Borealis extended overhead before descending towards the western horizon, where the vibrant colours appeared to meet the sea beyond Tate Hill and the headland below Whitby Abbey. The scale of the display was breathtaking and far more reminiscent of the Northern Lights displays seen in Norway or Iceland than anything usually experienced in England.
The photograph features Tate Hill Beach, often associated with Whitby's Dracula connections, beneath a sky filled with vivid greens, reds and purples.
