Staithes in the Snow
Snow transforms Staithes. White rooftops pick out the shapes of the closely gathered cottages, familiar streets take on a quieter appearance and the harbour becomes the setting for a beautiful winter scene.
Snow photographs make up much of this collection. While sunrise and sunset offer brief windows of colour, a covering of snow can make the village worth photographing throughout the day. Changing daylight reveals different details across the rooftops, waterfront and surrounding cliffs.
For anyone who usually visits in warmer weather, these pictures show another side of Staithes. They capture the familiar village dressed for winter, with all its coastal character still shining through.
The Staithes Panorama with the Seagulls
Taken from Cowbar Nab around fifteen years ago, this panoramic photograph brings together the village, harbour and seagulls in beautiful light. It remains one of my most successful photographs and a personal favourite.
My photography has developed considerably since I took it, but I’m still immensely proud of this picture. Sometimes the light, composition and a little good fortune come together to create something that stays with people.
Over the years, this panorama has found its way into many homes and started some lovely conversations. I particularly remember discussing it with a well-known singer who told me about working in Staithes when he was young. The photograph brought those memories back, and hearing his story made it even more special to me.
That is one of the pleasures of photographing a place like Staithes: a picture can hold a different memory for everyone who sees it.
Familiar Staithes in Beautiful Daylight
There is plenty to enjoy in Staithes long after sunrise. Afternoon light brings warmth to the cottages, reveals detail along the waterfront and gives the harbour the welcoming feel of a day spent by the coast.
These photographs capture the village as many people remember seeing it on holiday: boats in the harbour, rooftops gathered beneath the cliffs and views that invite you to stop and look a little longer.
Alongside the winter scenes, our daytime Staithes pictures celebrate those familiar views in their own right. Whether you remember an afternoon exploring the village or simply love its coastal setting, find a photograph that brings you back.
