Hole of Horcum, North Yorkshire
The Hole of Horcum is one of the most spectacular natural landmarks in the North York Moors, attracting walkers, photographers and visitors from across the country. Located on the A169 between Pickering and Whitby, and less than an hour's drive from Whitby, this vast natural amphitheatre offers breathtaking panoramic views across the surrounding moorland and is one of Yorkshire's most iconic landscapes.
Why is the Hole of Horcum Famous?
The Hole of Horcum is famous for its immense size, dramatic scenery and fascinating folklore. Often referred to as Yorkshire's Grand Canyon, it is one of the most recognisable natural landmarks in the North York Moors National Park. Its sweeping valley, surrounding heather moorland and spectacular viewpoints attract thousands of walkers, photographers and nature lovers every year, making it one of Yorkshire's most popular beauty spots.

According to local legend, the Hole of Horcum was created by the giant Wade, who scooped up a huge handful of earth and hurled it at his wife during an argument, leaving behind the enormous hollow that can still be seen today. While geology tells a different story, the legend has become an enduring part of the area's history and adds to the unique character of this remarkable place.
Having visited the Hole of Horcum on many occasions over the years, it remains one of my favourite locations to photograph in the North York Moors. I believe it is at its most beautiful in late summer when the surrounding moorland is covered in vibrant purple heather, transforming the landscape into a stunning sea of colour. The ever-changing light and dramatic landscape mean that no two visits are ever the same, which is why I return year after year. It's also a wonderful place for a walk, with a number of footpaths leading to spectacular viewpoints. The Hole of Horcum Circular Walk is particularly rewarding, offering fantastic panoramic views across this remarkable landscape, as can be seen in the photograph below.
Walking into the Hole of Horcum
Often referred to as Yorkshire's Grand Canyon, the Hole of Horcum is one of the most dramatic landscapes in the North York Moors. One of my favourite views is from the path leading down into the valley on the Hole of Horcum Circular Walk. This classic viewpoint perfectly captures the scale and beauty of the landscape, inviting you to leave the moorland behind and descend into the vast natural hollow below.

This photograph was taken towards the end of the heather season, when the purple blooms were just beginning to fade, creating a beautiful contrast with the golden grasses and lush green fields stretching out across the valley floor. It's a wonderful walk at any time of year, but late summer offers some of the most colourful and rewarding scenery. Whether you're visiting to enjoy the walk or simply to admire the spectacular views, the Hole of Horcum is one of the North York Moors' most memorable destinations.

Views Across Fylingdales Moor
While the Hole of Horcum is best known for its dramatic valley, the views from the top of the Hole of Horcum are just as spectacular. From the higher ground at the start of the Hole of Horcum Circular Walk, the landscape opens up to reveal sweeping views across Fylingdales Moor, where the patchwork of green fields meets the vast expanse of purple heather stretching across the North York Moors.
I always think this is one of the finest viewpoints in the area, particularly in late summer when the heather is in full bloom. The contrast between the colourful moorland and the lush green farmland creates a truly breathtaking landscape that changes beautifully with the seasons and the light.
The Hole of Horcum isn't just about looking down into the famous valley. It also offers magnificent views across the surrounding countryside towards Levisham and Goathland, making it one of the most rewarding places in the North York Moors for both walkers and photographers. Whether you're following the circular walk or simply stopping to admire the scenery, the panoramic views from the top are every bit as memorable as the valley itself.

A Classic View of the Hole of Horcum
This photograph perfectly captures why the Hole of Horcum is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the North York Moors. Taken from the edge of the moorland during late summer, it looks down across the famous valley as vibrant purple heather carpets the surrounding hillsides, while the warm sunlight illuminates the lush green fields below beneath a clear blue sky.
For me, this image sums up everything that makes the Hole of Horcum so special. The contrast between the rich purple heather, rolling green fields and dramatic valley creates one of Yorkshire's most breathtaking views, especially when photographed in perfect conditions. It's a landscape that never fails to impress and one I always enjoy returning to, whether I'm out walking or capturing new photographs. If you're planning a visit, late summer is undoubtedly one of the finest times to experience the Hole of Horcum at its very best.
