World's First Seaside Resort
Probably the world’s very first seaside resort, today the town of Scarborough is a thriving town and holiday destination, attracting people for all over the UK due to its long, sandy beaches and breathtaking coastline.
Scarborough Photography
At The North Yorkshire Gallery our local landscape photographer, Laurie Smithies, travels frequently to Scarborough and the nearby areas (including Oliver’s Mount) searching for inspiration for images, pictures, photos and prints. With each visit our love of the area grows, whether of Scarborough itself or of the neighbouring towns of Robin Hood's Bay, Bridlington, Helmsley, Malton and Beverley.
The Queen Of Scarborough Coast
During the 1600s a nearby spa was thought to contain waters with health giving properties, creating a rush of middle and upper class visitors to the areas. By the 1800s the world’s first purpose built hotels had become firmly established, including The Grand and The Crown which are still open for business today, along with a number of more recently opened hotels and spas. As well as its proud tourist heritage Scarborough is also home to a vibrant fishing community which is still active today.
North Bay
At The North Yorkshire Gallery we particularly look forward to the almost unparalleled views of Scarborough’s North Bay and South Bay, with views of long golden beaches stretching out into the distance. Our pictures of the area also feature views across the town itself and of the ruins of Scarborough Castle.
