Railway stations and familiar locations
Each station gives the North Yorkshire Moors Railway a different setting. Pickering’s platforms, the quieter surroundings of Levisham, Goathland’s much-loved station and the working railway atmosphere at Grosmont all offer photographs with a character of their own. Goathland may also be familiar as the station used for Hogsmeade in the first Harry Potter film.
Browse the station galleries above to look for a place you have visited or a locomotive you remember seeing there. The collection also includes trains at New Bridge Crossing and views along the line, where the railway becomes part of the wider North York Moors landscape.
The railway’s home fleet
Famous visitors draw a crowd, but the locomotives in the NYMR home fleet are part of the railway’s everyday story. This collection follows those engines at stations and out on the line, from close views showing their details to wider photographs of trains working through the moors.
Explore the home fleet gallery if you have a particular engine in mind, or browse for a photograph that brings back the sound and atmosphere of a journey on the railway.
Flying Scotsman and visiting locomotives
A visiting locomotive can make a familiar stretch of railway feel entirely different. Our dedicated galleries include photographs of Flying Scotsman, Sir Nigel Gresley, Tornado, Bahamas and 257 Squadron on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
Some other guest engines have visited the line for a shorter time, leaving us with only a handful of photographs. You’ll find those together in the Other NYMR Guest Loco collection. Browse by locomotive above if you are looking for a particular visit, or enjoy seeing how different engines look against the same Yorkshire scenery.
Steam trains in the North York Moors landscape
The setting matters as much as the engine. A train crossing open moorland feels different from one passing through woodland or pulling into a busy station. Heather, autumn colour, winter snow and changing skies give Laurie a reason to return to the line throughout the year.
Look through the collection for the view you want to live with: a recognisable locomotive, a favourite station or a wider landscape with a steam train travelling through it.
