Photographing Flying Scotsman on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway
Flying Scotsman is a wonderful subject to photograph, but the setting matters just as much as the locomotive. A trail of steam above the countryside, the curve of the railway through a valley or an arrival at a traditional station gives each picture its own character.
I’ve photographed Flying Scotsman at locations along the NYMR, returning for different light, weather and seasonal colour. This collection brings those photographs together, so you can choose a scene that reminds you of a railway visit, a favourite viewpoint or your love of steam trains.
Flying Scotsman Pictures from Stations, Valleys and Moorland
The collection includes Flying Scotsman at Grosmont, Goathland, Levisham and Pickering stations, alongside photographs from Esk Valley Cottages, Beck Hole, Water Arc, Darnholm, Abbot’s House Farm, Moorgates, Fen Bog and New Bridge Crossing.
These settings offer very different pictures: the familiar buildings and platforms of the heritage stations, woodland along the line and wider views across the moors. Browse the photographs above to find your favourite combination of locomotive, landscape and light

Flying Scotsman Canvas, Framed Prints and Photo Prints
Your choice of finish can change how a photograph looks in your room. A Flying Scotsman canvas gives the picture a textured finish, while a floating framed canvas adds a frame around the stretched canvas.
Framed prints offer a classic presentation for your favourite railway scene. Mounted prints and photo-only prints give you flexibility if you prefer to choose your own frame. Box prints and foam board prints provide further ways to display the photograph.

Flying Scotsman 60103 — Previously Numbered 4472
Built at Doncaster Works in 1923 and designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, Flying Scotsman began life as an A1 steam locomotive and was later rebuilt as an A3. It carried the famous LNER number 4472 before receiving British Railways number 60103.
Whether you know the engine as 4472 Flying Scotsman or locomotive 60103, this gallery celebrates its appearances on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway through original photography.
