The History of the Flying Scotsman

Few steam locomotives are as famous or as instantly recognisable as the Flying Scotsman. Built in 1923 for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER), this legendary steam locomotive became the first in the UK to officially reach 100 mph and has since become one of the world's most celebrated railway icons. Today, thousands of visitors travel from across Britain and around the world to see the Flying Scotsman in steam, making every appearance a special occasion.

One of the best places to experience and photograph the Flying Scotsman is the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Running through the spectacular scenery of the North York Moors National Park, the heritage railway provides a stunning backdrop of rolling moorland, ancient woodland, traditional stations and beautiful Yorkshire countryside. Whether climbing the gradients near Goathland, arriving at Grosmont or steaming through the open countryside, every journey offers unique photographic opportunities.

Over the years, I've photographed the Flying Scotsman at many different locations along the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in a wide variety of weather and seasons. From dramatic winter scenes and colourful autumn landscapes to golden summer evenings and atmospheric misty mornings, this collection showcases one of Britain's greatest steam locomotives at its very best. Every photograph is available to buy as a canvas print, framed print, mounted print, photo print and a range of other premium wall art, all professionally produced by the North Yorkshire Gallery.

Frequently Asked Questions About Flying Scotsman Photos

If you're planning to photograph the Flying Scotsman on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway or you're looking to buy Flying Scotsman prints, we've answered some of the most common questions below. Drawing on years of experience photographing Britain's most famous steam locomotive, these answers include practical photography advice, information about the railway and tips on some of the best locations to see and photograph the Flying Scotsman.

Why is the Flying Scotsman so famous?

The Flying Scotsman is widely regarded as the world's most famous steam locomotive. Built in 1923 for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER), it was named after the famous express train that operated between London and Edinburgh. On 30 November 1934, the Flying Scotsman became the first steam locomotive to be officially recorded reaching 100 mph, securing its place in railway history. It has since become an icon of British engineering and continues to attract huge crowds wherever it operates.

Where can you see the Flying Scotsman on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway?

When the Flying Scotsman visits the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, it normally operates along the full length of the heritage line between Grosmont and Pickering. Although you can enjoy it from stations including Grosmont, Goathland, Levisham and Pickering, some of the best viewing locations are out on the open railway where the locomotive can be seen working through the beautiful North York Moors landscape.

Which direction is best to photograph the Flying Scotsman?

From my experience, the best direction to photograph the Flying Scotsman is when it is travelling from Grosmont towards Pickering. As there isn't a turntable at Pickering, the locomotive usually returns tender-first, meaning you don't get the classic front-on view of the engine on the return journey. If you want the iconic sight of the Flying Scotsman leading the train, I'd always recommend photographing it on its journey towards Pickering.

Where is the best place to photograph the Flying Scotsman on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway?

My personal favourite location is Darnholme, just outside Goathland. The locomotive is still working hard as it climbs the gradient, producing plenty of steam, before sweeping around the curve with a superb side-on view. The location is known by many drivers as "The Gallery" and, in my opinion, offers one of the finest views of the Flying Scotsman anywhere on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

Where else would you recommend photographing the Flying Scotsman?

If you're looking for dramatic photographs, I'd recommend anywhere between Grosmont and Moorgates. Along this stretch the locomotive is climbing the gradients and working hard, producing far more steam than it does after passing Moorgates, where the line begins its descent towards Pickering. More steam almost always makes for more dramatic railway photography.

How can I avoid the crowds when photographing the Flying Scotsman?

One lesson I've learnt after spending many days chasing the Flying Scotsman around the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is to avoid the busiest stations whenever possible. Because the locomotive is so popular, places such as Goathland and Pickering can become extremely crowded, making it difficult to get an uninterrupted photograph. Some of my favourite images have been taken out in the open countryside, where there are fewer people, better viewpoints and more natural surroundings.

What camera settings are best for photographing the Flying Scotsman?

Fast shutter speeds are usually the key to producing sharp photographs of a moving steam locomotive. Good light makes a huge difference, allowing you to use faster shutter speeds while keeping your ISO lower for the best possible image quality. Over the years, I've spent many days following the Flying Scotsman around the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, waiting for the right combination of light, weather and steam to create the photographs featured on this page.

Can I buy Flying Scotsman prints?

Yes. Every Flying Scotsman photograph featured on this page is available to buy as a canvas print, floating framed canvas, framed print, mounted print, photo print, panoramic print, box print and a range of other premium wall art. You can order online or visit the North Yorkshire Gallery in Whitby to view a selection of Flying Scotsman prints in person. If there's a particular image you'd like to see before your visit, please get in touch and, where possible, we'll have it available for you to view in our gallery.
