Whitby Beach and West Cliff Sands
Whitby’s main beach is the long stretch of sand beside West Cliff. You may also know it as Whitby Sands or West Cliff Beach. It gives our photographs room to show the shoreline, the colourful beach huts and the changing North Sea, sometimes with the piers or cliffs completing the view.
Some pictures look along the beach towards the sea; others take in the sand as part of a wider Whitby scene. Tate Hill Beach and Whitby’s East Side
Across the harbour, Tate Hill Sands is Whitby’s smaller, sheltered beach. Photographs taken here can bring together the sand, harbour walls, piers and buildings of the old town. It offers a different Whitby beach picture from the broad sweep of West Cliff.
Tate Hill Sands also has a place in Whitby’s Dracula story. In Bram Stoker’s novel, the ship Demeter, carrying Dracula, runs aground on this shore. Today, photographs of the beach capture a real part of Whitby with an unusually vivid literary connection.
Saltwick Bay, near Whitby
Saltwick Bay adds a wilder side to this beach collection. Close to Whitby, its shoreline, rocks and cliffs make a striking subject, especially when the retreating tide reveals more of the beach and rock pools.

Sunrise and sunset over Whitby Beach
Whitby’s beaches are worth photographing long before the daytime crowds arrive and after the evening light begins to fade. A sunrise can put colour over the sea and piers, while sunset brings warm light to the beach huts, sand and wider coastline.
Around the summer solstice, Whitby offers the unusual opportunity to photograph both sunrise and sunset over the North Sea from suitable beach viewpoints.
